...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand issue #5 (FINALLY!) ends here.

Ding-dang. It's been a hell of a time cranking this puppy out. The hardest issue so far. My rendering has never been better, and I've never been SLLLLLLOOOOOWWWWWWEEEEEERRRRRR. And too many copy>pastes -- as I move forward, I'm going to use that bit a lot more sparingly, and (when I have time), I'll go back and make patch art to replace the worst of it. Thank you for bearing with me as I've been learning what NOT to do.

To remedy that issue, I plowed through a bunch of fanarts and pinups, trying to pare down my approach. This page ended up taking as long as any other this issue, but applying all my new shortcuts and whatnots over the course of a full page was a new challenge compared to the (mostly background-free) fanarts.

This page marks the first SFX in SCP. I've been aiming for a stark cinematic sensibility as much as possible in this book, but damn if this panel doesn't pop a thousand times brighter with a POW! or two.

I almost abandoned the Cheri/Captain framing device, but I think it adds a lot to this page.

SPOILERS: Next time we see Jack, there will be something cold on his crotch. (No, not Arayna.)

The big POW! is for the smack to the face. The little POW! is for the nut shot.

But as all men know, a little POW! goes a long way below the belt.

Fun fact: the "POW!" background occurred to me only after I thought about making a wallpaper of that panel with the word "FEMINISM!" instead, as a joke.

Erica and Johnson had a little exchange at the end of this page in the script, but Kathryn's collapse was much better served with the black. Johnson'll get a mention in the next issue. Speaking of:

Issue #6 will start next week with the cover! And page 1 the week after. There's still three full issues of sexy punchy craziness coming to conclude this first arc. Things are about to get EPIC.

Soup sock,

Teehee. My little tiny Veronica Mars tribute.

And I will, of course, explain why she collapsed in the next issue.

She can totally take care of herself.
*passes out*
Okay...maybe we should help out. You know...a little.

Congratulations on wrapping up the chapter. Bring on issue 6!

One of the major themes of the story is Kathryn's feeling so very distant from her humanity and the rest of humankind, acting like she doesn't need the enormous amount of help and community that she actually does. It's catching up to her.

In the script it was a punch, but when I went to thumbnail sketch it, I thought, "Nope - taint/ball kick. Dude's askin' for it." Jack's actually a good guy at heart*. But he really has gone out of his way to earn this.

(*While we're all celebrating his receipt of just desserts, let's keep in mind that issue #2 established that he helps single mom Erica out with James' daughter Jayde.)

Way to launch him out of his boots. Hope Erica's ok.

Thanks. I get really ham-handed with the shirts, but to good effect I think.
