I drawed a reusable background to save time! And it totally didn't work!

...I hate drawing backgrounds.

I've been having voice problems for years due to the strain of working in a call center. This has been compounded by the fact that I like to sing while I draw and Photoshop and whatnot. I've had to stop (hopefully temporarily), so I've been listening to podcasts instead. I've been listening to the Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew Show (which I was so happy to discover exists), and I also popped my Nerdist cherry.

My friend David Aspmo has been trying to get me to listen to Nerdist for years, but I love working while listening to music so much that I've been putting it off. But between Talking Dead and staying up so late working as to be able to watch @Midnight, I felt compelled to complete the Chris Hardwick media trifecta.

The result of all this is that I threw a Chris Hardwick Easter egg into this page. There are perhaps WAY too many tiny details on this page; was including a fake book titled The Period of Witches because I'm a perpetual 9 year-old boy worth the extra time you had to wait for this page? Probably not. But I chuckle like an idiot to myself every time I re-see it.

Speaking of giant wastes of time, you'll notice that Kathryn is wearing a translucent undershirt. It was not in the final art; in my mind, there was to be great ease in Googling "Victorian lace" and find something to stat in over her cleavage-y area. NOPE! I spent maybe 3 hours on finding a public domain drawing to use. Eventually I found an old drawing of a wild rose, bent some leaves over to "close" it, and pretended it was lopsided lace.

None of this was worth anyone's time, but it was meant to be so simple. I felt I had to do it, since I drew her dress so low cut specifically to stat in an undershirt.

A waste of time I really HAD to commit to was speed painting nude Kathryn's self-portrait, which first appeared in black and white in issue #1. It was always meant to be a color painting... so it HAD to be a color painting.

Adding more time to this page was James. In the script, James does absolutely NOTHING on this page -- but when you go to draw the thing, you realize that James has to do SOMETHING. So, somewhere, he finds "X-ray" glasses and proceeds to imagine he's looking through the clothes of all the lovely ladies on this page. While saying "Swiggity swooty" over and over for no reason. I'm an idiot. And I'm so proud.

I hope the overall colors are good. I tried to skimp on the details and shading in the dark sections opposite the sun... but it ended up looking flat, so I went in today and painted in some shading to 3D it up a bit. I'm pretty happy with the sky. It looks like a sky.:)

Also: I'll give a cookie to the first person to catch the Sting reference in this page.

Soup Sock,

In her mind she's thinking "Let him catch up on child support payments first, then we'll talk about boob viewing."

Colouring suits your pages very well. Makes your very complex/detailed art pop a lot more clearly! Verrry nice.

As a note, I think the last panel needs to be "MacKnight is *likely* to own"

You have to imagine someone from Snatch saying it. Then it sounds right.

Yup. It's a Britishism.

Kathryn originally had an Irish accent, but then lived in London for about a century. She now has a British accent that sounds generally upper-crust, but sometimes something from lower classes slips in. She was involved in the Ripper investigation and other crime investigations in the poorer areas of London, and thus picked up some bad verbal habits. Not "'Ello, guv'ner!" bad, but there are bits of it in her diction.

...I've put a lot of thought into all this.

Thanks for saying so, marshallreeves. It really is quite an endeavor and time-consuming effort to add color... but yeah, it clarifies focus and divides elements up in a way I've never come close to achieving in b&w.

She has a point. Never do a person if you don't care. It's a wrong point.

Amen. But it's hard to be sensitive to others' needs in the state Kathryn's in.

Thank you! I'm trying really hard to make them interesting without making them too time-consuming. I can't keep this color thing up alone forever, but at least I can hopefully give prospective colorists a REALLY good idea of what I'm looking to have done.
